2008年世界大賽MVP、費城人奪冠功臣漢默斯，近2年因球隊陣容不齊全，勝場數不如以往，本季至今出賽20場，戰績僅6勝7敗，但投球局數128.2局送出137K，防禦率3.64、WHIP值1.18仍在球隊居冠，球場上的宰制力仍成為各隊爭相網羅的關鍵。
目前在美聯西區暫居第2的太空人，為了保有競爭季後賽的實力，將重點放在補強先發輪值戰力，日前從運動家找來強投卡茲米爾(Scott Kazmir)助陣，現在則將腦筋動到漢默斯身上；傳總管勞諾(Jeff Luhnow)這段時間積極向費城人洽談交易細節。
不過漢默斯身上還綁著未來3年薪資以及2019年買斷金，約7000多萬美元要支付，加上合約內容中的「不得交易」霸王條款，太空人也名列其中，種種因素也替雙方交易增添障礙。
至於潛在買家之一的洋基，據外媒《CBA Sports》報導，洋基明確指出不會把大聯盟官網排名洋基農場前4名的年輕新秀當作交易籌碼；但費城人願意把漢默斯拿出來交易的條件，就是要換回多位潛力球員，當作重建基石；在雙方理念牴觸下，洋基可能就此退出競爭行列。
追求庫耶托(Johnny Cueto)失敗，現在又不願拿農場新秀交易漢默斯，洋基接下來可能會將目標轉往同樣被老虎擺上交易檯面的強投普萊斯(David Price)，他本季出賽20場，繳出9勝3敗，防禦率2.31的亮眼數據。
